General – Green Earth – Safer World

At UL, we know why we come to work.

The Chemical Insights Research Institute (CIRI), of Underwriters Laboratories Research Institutes, is recruiting a Toxicologist to collaborate with other researchers to apply a wide variety of scientific knowledge based in disciplines of exposure science, chemistry, and toxicology with the goal of improving consumer product safety.

Specifically, this position is focused on addressing concerns related to advancements in consumer products and technologies that may impact human health. Topic areas include: physicochemical characterization of particle and chemical emissions stemming from electronic nicotine delivery systems or e-cigarettes, 3D printers, determining the biological activity and toxicological profiles of aerosols using in vitro model systems, inhalation dosimetry, molecular epidemiology and the development of novel measurement methodologies assessing hazards within vulnerable populations.

The Toxicologist will assist in initiating the design, development, execution, and implementation of consumer safety research projects. Conducts experiments, modeling, and analysis to provide accurate data and information with the goal of developing that information into peer-reviewed journal articles, reports, and on-line educational programs. Defines concepts and criteria to resolve major problems in current programs or approaches on topics related to CIRI initiatives.  Maintains substantial knowledge of state-of-the-art principles and theories and contributes to scientific literature and conferences. Uses professional concepts and procedures to solve a wide range of scientific problems.

Our core mission at CIRI is to help improve the health of people and the planet. More than 90% of children across the globe are exposed to a toxic mixture of chemicals in the air daily. At CIRI, we are working to change that by combining the best minds with rigorous scientific research and a commitment to thorough and accurate results. We then deliver these scientific insights in actionable ways so educators, manufacturers, healthcare providers, and consumers can make informed environmental health decisions and extend lives.  To be successful in this role you must enjoy planning and carrying out experiments and be able to work within a multidisciplinary team in order to undertake comprehensive investigations.

At Underwriters Laboratories, we wake up every day with a common purpose: to make the world a safer, more secure and sustainable place. Science is in our DNA; we are endlessly curious and passionate about seeking and speaking the truth. We take delight in knowing that our work makes a meaningful contribution to society, and we are proud that our culture is centered on integrity, collaboration, inclusion and excellence. Underwriters Laboratories stands at the forefront of technological advancement, and we are continually challenged to find new ways to foster innovation and positive change. Satisfying? Yes. Exciting? Absolutely!
