We have an exciting opportunity for an Information Technology Specialist at UL Research Institutes and UL Standards & Engagement, based in our Evanston, IL office. The IT Specialist will be responsible for supporting user and research partner needs while ensuring compliance with enterprise standards. Assists with maintenance and ensures the integrity of a full range of information systems and applications including but not limited to computers, network infrastructure, servers, data management, instrumentation integration and IT communication systems.

What you’ll learn & achieve:

As the Information Technology Specialist, you will play a key role in the rapid growth of UL IT Operations as you:

  • Support and maintain Personal Computer (PC) operations including the diagnosis of hardware and software failure. Maintain hardware and software in compliance with corporate standards. Act as the liaison with vendors to repair or replace hardware. Support help-desk function for internal and remote users.
  • Work with Corporate IT staff to facilitate upgrades to the existing network, hardware, and software infrastructure. Communicate local requirements that must be met and assists in the delivery of the final solution.
  • Support on site scientific laboratories in integrating analytical and measurement instrumentation with data management systems. Recommend new equipment and software for projects and data applications as needed.
  • Implement security measures and information assurance requirements.
  • Read and follow the Underwriters Laboratories Code of Conduct and follow all physical and digital security practices.
  • Perform other duties as directed.

  • Demonstrated ability and knowledge of computer systems including network infrastructure, servers and PABX systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, and demonstrated high level organizational and multi-tasking skills in a technical environment
  • Ability to work with PhD level scientists and participate on special project teams.

Professional education and experience requirements for the role include:

    • Bachelor’s Degree in computer science or related field.
    • A minimum of two years of directly related experience.
