We have an exciting opportunity for a Software Engineer to join our Digital Safety Research Institute (DSRI), a UL Research Institutes (ULRI).

The Software Engineer is engaged in all phases of the software development lifecycle for DSRI. The Software Engineer will participate in design meetings and consultation with users and stakeholders to refine and test AI models or software to meet consumer safety needs and interact with open-source partners in the achievement of research and technology initiatives.

What you’ll learn & achieve:

Essential Functions, Roles, and Responsibilities

  • Develop, test, and implement new software solutions.
  • Design and update software database that includes software apps, web sites, data communication processes, AI models, user interfaces, etc.
  • Test, maintain and recommend software improvements to ensure strong functionality and optimization.
  • Independently install customize and integrate open-source software packages.
  • Resolve complex technical design issues. Identify ways to improve system performance and impact.
  • Facilitate root cause analysis of system issues.
  • Work with colleagues to review new and existing code and perform multi-level testing.
  • Analyze customer safety requirements and convert requirements into code and design documents.
  • Independently analyzes and isolates application issues and performs problem resolution.
  • Monitor progress of larger software-based projects through an agile workflow.
  • Work as part of a team.
  • Communicate regularly with management and technical support colleagues.
  • Perform other duties as directed.

  • Strong technical knowledge and/or software development fundamentals.
  • Strong working knowledge in cloud applications and specific program languages and open-source components for application platforms.

  • Positive and collaborative attitude and interpersonal skills to work effectively with leaders and colleagues across the organization.
  • Must be a self-starter

Experience and Education Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related discipline.
  • Some experience in the software engineering or related area
