We have an exciting opportunity for a Tax Manager at UL Research Institutes and UL Standards & Engagement based in our Evanston, IL office.

 

The Tax Manager will conduct tax research and advise management on the impact of tax laws on UL Research Institutes (ULRI) and UL Standards & Engagement (ULSE) and implement policies surrounding NFP tax issues.  Interprets domestic tax statutes and regulations; develops strategies, methodologies, systems, and procedures for reducing tax liability.  Negotiates with tax authorities regarding disputes and/or interpretations. The Tax Manager will be responsible for assuring compliance with local, state, and federal tax statutes and regulations.

What you’ll learn & achieve:

As the Tax Manager you will play a key role in the rapid growth of UL as you:

  • Research and interpret domestic tax legislation, regulations, and court decisions to determine the impact on the corporation.
  • Provide tax compliance and/or advisory services for a tax-exempt organization.
  • Propose the most effective methods to reduce tax liability.
  • Advise operations, Legal and Global Finance on domestic tax laws and regulations such as: income taxes, sales and use taxes, property taxes, excise taxes, and withholding taxes.
  • Manage all U.S. federal/state/local tax returns, including income, property, sales and use tax, and miscellaneous tax filing documents and related reports, maintaining all tax related records including reports.
  • Review financial statement tax disclosures.
  • Advise and collaborate with various departments, including HR, Legal, Payroll, and Accounts Payable, on administering and resolving tax-related matters.
  • Represent the organizations in audits by the IRS and state and local tax authorities.
  • Contribute to and/or lead other department specific and cross-functional initiatives.

  • Advanced and detailed knowledge and understanding of tax compliance, principles and administration, best practices, federal and state tax regulations, and legal requirements.
  • Knowledge of non-U.S. direct and indirect tax statutes may be required.

  • Exceptional process and project management skills, with the ability to balance day-to-day activities and implementation of processes with specific deadlines.
  • Positive and collaborative interpersonal skills to work effectively with leaders and colleagues across the organization.
  • Excellent attention to detail and problem-solving skills. Ability to identify root causes, develop practical solutions, and work in collaboration with colleagues across the organization to address strategic, operational, and any other roadblocks to success.
  • Sound judgment and ability to handle sensitive information and situations with discretion and confidentiality, utilizing policies and procedures to guide appropriate action.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong mathematical and computer skills required, including spreadsheet, word processing and research software. Working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel.

Experience and Education Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or related field.
  • Minimum 6 years of directly related experience working in tax, particularly with exempt
  • Technical expertise to review Forms 990, 990-T, and 990-PF.
  • Certified Public Accountant preferred.
