We have an exciting opportunity for a Workday IT Engineer at UL Research Institutes and UL Standards & Engagement based in our Evanston, IL office.

The Workday IT Engineer manages, configures, and supports the Workday Human Capital Management (HCM) system. The Workday IT Engineer implements, optimizes, and maintains Workday solutions to meet human resources and financial management needs. The Workday IT Engineer works closely with various stakeholders, including HR professionals, finance teams, and IT personnel, to ensure the seamless operation and continuous improvement of the Workday platform.

What you’ll learn & achieve:

As the Workday IT Engineer you will play a key role in the rapid growth of UL as you:

  • Collaborate with HR and Finance teams to gather requirements and design, configure, and customize Workday modules to support business processes. Implement new features, enhancements, and changes in line with best practices and industry standards.
  • Manage and maintain integrations between Workday and other enterprise systems (e.g., payroll, benefits administration, time tracking, onboarding, equipment ordering). Troubleshoot integration issues and collaborate with integration specialists to optimize data flows.
  • Provide technical support and resolve issues related to Workday functionality, security, and performance. Regularly monitor system health, apply updates, and ensure data integrity.
  • Develop and maintain Workday reports, dashboards, and analytics to support data-driven decision-making. Assist users in accessing and understanding relevant data.
  • Adhere to company cyber security policies and guidelines, including and not limited to administering user access, roles, and permissions within the Workday platform. Act as the Workday Security Administrator for both HR and Finance modules.
  • Conduct testing for new features, integrations, and system upgrades to ensure accuracy and reliability. Participate in user acceptance testing (UAT) and provide training to end-users as needed.
  • Assist in the rollout of Workday-related changes, including process improvements, system upgrades, and new module implementations. Ensure effective communication and training to end-users during change initiatives.
  • Work closely with cross-functional teams to understand business requirements and ensure the Workday platform aligns with organizational needs. Maintain comprehensive documentation related to system configuration, changes, and troubleshooting processes.
  • Identify opportunities for system enhancements, process improvements, and automation to increase efficiency and effectiveness within the Workday ecosystem.
  • Keep up to date with Workday releases, features, and industry trends to proactively propose improvements and stay ahead of potential issues.
  • Utilize automation solutions, scripts, and programming languages to streamline administrative tasks and system efficiency improvement.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Strong understanding of HR and finance processes, with the ability to translate business requirements into Workday configurations.
  • Familiarity with Workday integration tools and technologies (e.g., EIB, Core Connectors, Studio).
  • Experience with Workday report writing and analytics tools.
  • Knowledge of security principles and access controls within the Workday system.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with an attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate with various stakeholders.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
  • Knowledge of PowerShell, and programming languages for automation is a plus.
  • Workday certifications (e.g., Workday HCM, Workday Integration, etc.) are a plus.

Experience and Education Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in a technical or business discipline.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience as a Workday Administrator or similar role, with hands-on experience configuring and supporting Workday HCM modules.
