The Material Discovery Research Institute (MDRI), of Underwriters Laboratories Research Institutes, is recruiting a Research Scientist II. This position will be located in our MDRI Skokie, IL labs.

 

In this role, the Research Scientist II will perform synthesis and characterization on materials such as metal-organic frameworks and zeolites, specifically focusing on the discovery of materials with applications in global challenges such as carbon capture and utilization and water harvesting. The Research Scientist will have the opportunity to communicate research findings and their significance through publications, patents, presentations, and various organizational and educational tools that advance the institute's mission.

What you’ll learn & achieve:

  • Design and execute projects to discover novel materials such as metal-organic frameworks and contribute to global sustainability efforts in areas such as carbon capture, utilization, and atmospheric water harvesting and purification.
  • Adopt and utilize machine learning and artificial intelligence to shorten the discovery timeline and accelerate impact of the materials discovery process.
  • Understand and differentiate porous materials using advanced characterization techniques.
  • Develop standard operation procedures (SOPs) for synthesis procedures and instrument operations.
  • Adhere to safe work practices and operational guidelines.
  • Collaborate efficiently in a multifunctional team environment and engage with internal and external collaborators.
  • Contribute towards the publication of research papers, technical reports, and patent applications, representing MDRI in the scientific community and at industry events.
  • Perform other duties as directed.

What makes you a great fit:

  • Advanced knowledge of materials/chemistry, including synthesis and characterization, and their evaluation.
  • Strong knowledge in porous materials, with an emphasis on metal-organic frameworks, and extensive hands-on experience in a wet lab.
  • Demonstrated experience in structural elucidation, interpretation and refinement.
  • Familiarity with accelerated materials discovery, via machine learning and artificial intelligence, methodologies.
  • Fundamental understanding of the synthesis of small organic molecules.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in delivering technical presentations and achieving peer-reviewed scientific journal publications.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, including the ability to identify root causes, develop practical solutions, and collaborate with colleagues.
  • Excellent time and project management skills to handle multiple projects simultaneously with the ability to adapt to new challenges quickly.
  • Positive and collaborative attitude with exceptional interpersonal skills for effective teamwork across the organization.
  • High degree of curiosity to learn about the mission and impact of the organization and its specialized areas.
  • Excellent written, oral communication, and presentation skills.
  • Ability to thrive in an innovative environment.

Experience and Education Requirements

  • PhD degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or Materials Chemistry or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience in organic synthesis and ability to solve structures from powder x-ray diffraction data is preferred.
